Rainforest Alliance Certification

Rainforest Alliance is the certification most often requested by larger roasters and retail private-label programmes. Its traceability model options are the part most likely to catch out a first-time buyer.

Quick answer

Rainforest Alliance certifies farms and supply chains against a standard covering environmental management, human rights and farm record-keeping. The 2020 standard introduced a sustainability differential and a sustainability investment payable to certificate holders, both of which need to be agreed in the contract.

What the standard covers

  • Forests and biodiversity — protection of native ecosystems and prohibition of conversion of designated areas.
  • Human rights — an assess-and-address approach to child labour, forced labour, discrimination and workplace violence.
  • Working conditions — wages, contracts, health and safety for hired labour.
  • Farm management — record-keeping, planning, and an internal management system for group certification.
  • Climate-smart agriculture — soil, water and input management, and adaptation practice.

It is a broader standard than organic in scope and less prescriptive on any single dimension. Where organic is largely about what may be applied to the crop, Rainforest Alliance is about how the farm and the supply chain are managed.

The differential and the investment

The 2020 standard introduced two mandatory payments, and both are contractual matters that must be agreed rather than assumed.

Sustainability Differential
A mandatory cash payment to the certificate holder, additional to the price. The amount is negotiated, not fixed by the scheme.
Sustainability Investment
A mandatory investment towards the certificate holder’s costs of meeting the standard, agreed against an investment plan.

Agree both in the contract

Because the differential is negotiated rather than fixed, a Rainforest Alliance contract that does not state it is incomplete. The same applies to the investment and the plan it supports.

Traceability models

Which model applies to your purchase
ModelWhat it meansImplication
Identity preservedThe certified coffee is kept separate and identifiable throughoutHighest assurance; most restrictive on sourcing flexibility
SegregatedCertified coffee is kept apart from non-certified, but may be mixed with other certified coffeeThe common model for physical certified coffee
Mass balanceCertified volumes are tracked administratively; physical coffee may be mixedUsed at scale; the coffee in the bag may not be the certified coffee
Which model applies has to be stated in the contract. A buyer expecting segregated coffee and receiving mass balance has a real problem — the claim they can make about the product differs.

East African availability

Rainforest Alliance certification is present across East Africa, and is most established on larger estates and on organised cooperative structures in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, where the management systems the standard requires are already in place.

Availability

Certified lots may be available subject to origin, crop, certification status and current inventory.

Frequently asked questions

What does Rainforest Alliance certification cover?
Environmental management including forests and biodiversity, human rights, working conditions, farm management systems and climate-smart practice. It is broader in scope than organic and less prescriptive on any single dimension.
What is the Sustainability Differential?
A mandatory cash payment to the certificate holder, additional to the coffee price, introduced with the 2020 standard. The amount is negotiated between the parties rather than fixed by the scheme, so it must be stated in the contract.
What is the difference between segregated and mass balance?
Under segregation the certified coffee is physically kept apart from non-certified coffee. Under mass balance, certified volumes are tracked administratively and the physical coffee may be mixed. The claim you can make about the product differs, so the model must be agreed explicitly.
Can a lot be both organic and Rainforest Alliance certified?
Yes. Dual and triple certification is common, particularly among cooperative structures that already run the management systems each scheme requires. Each certification has its own scope, audit and documentation.
