In short
Ethiopia is the genetic home of Arabica and produces both washed and natural coffee traceable to washing station and district. Its Grade 1–9 classification is the only East African system that combines a raw defect count with a cup evaluation, so an Ethiopian grade carries more information than a size grade does.
The genetic home of Arabica
Ethiopia holds the overwhelming majority of *Coffea arabica*’s genetic diversity, in thousands of local landrace populations. Production is overwhelmingly smallholder and garden-based, with coffee grown alongside food crops, and includes semi-forest and forest coffee systems in the south-west with very high diversity.
This is why Ethiopian offers so often say "heirloom". It is a placeholder, not a variety — it means the specific material is unidentified. Alongside the landraces sit released selections from the Jimma Agricultural Research Center, including the 74110 and 74112 series, and named regional selections such as Kurume, Dega and Wolisho. Where a station can identify the material, ask for it; where it cannot, "local landraces" is the more honest description.
Washing stations and administrative geography
Cherry is delivered to a washing station, which aggregates it from the surrounding kebeles. The station is therefore the practical unit of traceability, sitting inside a woreda (district) and a zone.

Yirgacheffe is a good illustration: it is a district inside the Gedeo zone whose washed profile is consistent enough that the name became a quality designation in its own right. It is still less precise than a named station within it.

Grading that includes the cup
Ethiopia’s classification evaluates a raw defect count *and* a cup evaluation, and combines them. That makes an Ethiopian Grade 2 more informative than a Kenyan AA — it tells you something about the cup as well as the green. It still does not replace cupping the sample.
Washed and natural grades are not equivalent
The defect allowances differ by preparation, so a natural Grade 3 and a washed Grade 3 are not the same standard. Always state preparation and grade together. See Ethiopia coffee grades.
Buyer considerations
- 1Ask for the station, not just the region. A regional name is a broad container; a station is a defined lot.
- 2State the preparation with the grade. Washed Grade 2 and natural Grade 3 are both specialty and are not comparable.
- 3Do not accept "heirloom" as variety information where a station can do better.
- 4Plan around Djibouti. Ethiopia is landlocked and the road transit from Addis Ababa is the main schedule variable.
- 5Freshest arrivals land roughly February to May. Work backwards from that if freshness matters.
- 6Confirm the current classification basis for the crop being contracted — Ethiopian market structure and grading rules have been reformed more than once.

What a grade does not tell you
Grades describe preparation, bean size and defect tolerance. Outside Ethiopia’s classification, which includes a cup component, a grade designation does not by itself predict cup quality — confirm every parcel on the sample.
