This is one of the most searched questions in green coffee logistics and one of the most confidently answered with numbers that are wrong for the reader’s situation. The calculation itself is simple; the inputs are what vary.

Quick answer

There is no universal answer. A 20ft container is usually payload-limited rather than volume-limited for green coffee in bags: the weight ceiling is reached before the space runs out. The real limit is the lower of the container’s payload plate, the shipping line’s stated maximum, and the road weight limit on the origin leg — which is why this page gives you a calculator rather than a figure.

Why there is no single number

Green coffee in jute bags is dense. In a 20ft dry container, the weight limit is normally reached well before the cubic capacity is used. So the binding constraint is a weight, and that weight is set by whichever of the following is lowest.

  1. 1The container’s payload plate. Maximum gross weight minus tare, both stamped on the door of that specific container. Two nominally identical 20ft boxes can differ.
  2. 2The shipping line’s stated maximum. Lines impose their own limits, which can be below the plate.
  3. 3Road weight limits on the origin leg. Frequently the real constraint in East Africa — particularly on the long inland corridors from Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and Ethiopia. A container that could legally sail may not be legally trucked to the port.
  4. 4Destination road limits. The same problem at the other end, and easy to forget until the box cannot leave the terminal fully loaded.
  5. 5Stow pattern and packaging. Palletised cargo uses more space per kilo than floor-loaded bags; bulk liners change the arithmetic entirely.

The number that matters is on the door

Payload varies between individual containers. Any planning figure is provisional until the specific container is allocated and its plate is read. Never contract a bag count that assumes a payload you have not verified.

Palletisation reduces the payload available for coffee — the pallets themselves are weight — while making destination handling substantially faster. It is a landed-cost decision, not just a loading one.

Protecting the cargo in transit

A container crossing from East Africa to Europe or North America passes through large temperature swings. Warm humid air trapped at stuffing condenses on the container roof as the box cools, and drips back onto the cargo — "container rain". It is a leading cause of arrival moisture and mould claims.

  • Desiccant — hanging moisture-absorbing units, sized to the voyage and the cargo moisture.
  • Kraft paper or cardboard lining on walls and roof, keeping bags off cold steel surfaces.
  • Dunnage to prevent shifting; a collapsed stack damages bags and liners.
  • Container inspection before stuffing — dry, clean, odour-free, no light visible through seams, no protrusions.
  • Stuffing photographs and a seal record — part of the loading documentation, and the evidence base for any later claim.

Is a coffee container weight-limited or volume-limited?

It depends on your destination handling. Pallets make unloading far faster but consume payload and cube, reducing the coffee per container. It is a landed-cost calculation rather than a loading preference.
